April brings us a day to celebrate, empower, and do our part – Earth Day. I want to clarify what Earth Day is, the theme of Earth Day 2021, and what you can do this April and every month thereafter!

What is Earth Day?
Earth Day is about “empowering individuals with the information, the tools, the messaging and the communities needed to make an impact and drive change.”
Earth Day occurs every April 22nd to mark the birth of the modern environmental movement in 1970.
In 1990, Earth Day went global. Today, 1 billion people and 190+ countries engage in this day of action.
This year, I encourage you to be a part of it!
What is the Theme for Earth Day 2021?
How You Can Celebrate
Earth Day 2021
Before we dive into what direct action you can take, I want to discuss how you should implement them.
Earth Day 2021 is on April 22nd, but you can celebrate Earth Day right now and every day after. I encourage you to start as soon as possible and keep it going all year!
1. Spread the Word
We live in a digital world where social media allows us to communicate in ways we never thought were possible. This is power! Use that power to encourage others to participate in Earth Day 2021, educate people about climate change and our impact, or share what you’re doing this Earth Day, you never know who you will inspire!
2. Take an Earth Day Quiz
Online quizzes are fun, and EARTHDAY.ORG offers a variety of quizzes where you can explore your own knowledge and learn more about the environment!
3. Join a Clean-Up or Other Event
Check social media, local news, or even with friends to see what kind of Earth Day events are happening in your area.
No events? You can try and put one together yourself or simply do your own mini clean-up when you’re outside.
4. Get Outside
You’re helping yourself and the Earth when you respectfully spend time in nature. What better day than Earth Day to get outside?
5. Read, Learn, and Share!
Educate yourself and share with others! Progress comes from learning and understanding how our interactions impact the world around us.
6. Make an Earth Day Window Sign
Feeling crafty? Make a window sign that shows your environmental activism, a nature-inspired quote, or an art piece to support Earth Day!
You never know who you will inspire.
7. Try a Plant-Based Meal
As someone with food allergies, I do not push plant-based diets on anyone. However, you can and should find a plant-based meal to incorporate into your weekly and maybe even daily routines!
With the growing understanding and popularity of plant-based eating, there are a lot more options out there.
8. Turn Off the Lights and Unplug
Think about all those unnecessary emissions from leaving your lights on and electronics plugged in.
You may think that it is not enough for emissions to count, but think about how many other people are thinking like you and those collective emissions. Turn it off and unplug.
9. Set Eco-Goals
Make a commitment to restoring the Earth by setting eco-friendly goals! It does not need to be a new year, a new week, or even a new day to start! Start now.
10. Attend Virtual Events
EARTHDAY.ORG is hosting digital and live events!
You can attend them to learn more and become inspired!
11. Volunteer or Donate
For anyone with time or money available, consider volunteering with a local, regional, or even global environmental group.
If you cannot commit to volunteering, donate to the cause!
12. Challenge Your Local Leaders
Let the leaders in your area know how important the environment is. Fight for what is right and make sure it is always a priority on their agenda.
Recently, I’ve been looking into minimalism and how I can adapt the mindset without extreme measures.
I decided that every day until the end of April I will find 5 things a day to donate, gift, recycle, or upcycle! I will only toss something out if it is at the end of its lifecycle. Try it with me or schedule it for a future challenge!
