Untamed by Glennon Doyle was recommended to me by several podcasts – which is actually where I get most of my reading suggestions!

Every podcast emphasized how important this book is especially in 2020. It covers a wide variety of topics that all tie into being your true self and breaking social norms.

It is no secret that society has created “labeled boxes” that we should all fit in. Be this, do that, and lose yourself in the process. We cannot lose ourselves.

The beauty about us, like Glennon addresses in Untamed, is that even if we lose ourselves we can break free from the cage and become who we really are

Reasons to Read Untamed?

  • If you love self-help books, Untamed is a great one.
  • LGBTQ+ plays a significant role as Glennon is a religious woman who left her heterosexual marriage and married a woman while maintaining a happy family and staying true to herself.
  • This book can push you in the direction of growth and self-love
  • Become aware of social constructs and learn how they impacted you. You will be surprised by what you learn about yourself.
  • Understand how to educate children, family, and peers to be more open.
  • Learn how to respect your own individuality and the individuality of others!
  • You believe in the power of women and feminism.

Quotes From Untamed by Glennon Doyle

In this section, I share my favorite quotes from the book.

Some quotes I will have a small discussion on what this quote means from my interpretation, but some quotes are so beautiful and influential I like to leave the unique feeling and interpretation to you.

"I have this hunch that everything was supposed to be more beautiful than this." Untamed by Glennon Doyle

Trust your gut and listen to it.

"The opposite of sensitive is insensitive, and that's no badge of honor." Untamed by Glennon Doyle

Society tries to convince us that being cold and emotionless is a strength. The real strength is in feeling the emotion and getting through it.

"being fully human is not about feeling happy, it's about feeling everything." Untamed by Glennon Doyle

"NOT tHIS" IS A VERY IMPORTANT STAGE. Untamed by Glennon Doyle

One of my favorite quotes from the book.

The “Not This” stage is not discussed enough. How will you ever figure out your path if you do not realize what you do not want? We are not all lucky enough to get on the right path instantly by chance.

When you find yourself on the wrong path, appreciate that you know what you don’t want – and move in a different direction.

"Dealing with the dropped shoe is less paralyzing, apparently, than waiting for that shoe to drop." untamed by Glennon Doyle

"It takes special bravery to honor yourself when the crowd is pressuring you not to. it's easier just to give in." Untamed by Glennon Doyle

Being true to yourself takes bravery.

"I stopped being a quiet peacekeeper and started being a loud peacemaker. MY ANGER WAS GOOD." Untamed by Glennon Doyle

The ones who want to silence you will always tell you you’re too loud. Use your voice and anger for a change!

"pEOPLE ARE TELLING US THE TRUTH FOR THE FIRST TIME. THE TRUTH FEELS LIKE AN ATTACK BECAUSE WE HAVE BEEN PROTECTED BY COMFORTABLE LIES FOR SO LONG." Untamed by Glennon Doyle

When you feel attacked, first ask yourself why?

"WHILE ROCK BOTTOM FEELS LIKE THE END - IT'S ALWAYS THE BEGINNING OF SOMETHING." Untamed by Glennon Doyle

When you feel like all is lost, just remember you will find your way. The first step has to come from somewhere, even if somewhere is a dark place.

"GOOD ART ORGINATES NOT FROM THE DESIRE TO SHOW OFF BUT FROM THE DESIRE TO SHOW YOURSELF." Untamed by Glennon Doyle

"SOMEBODY'S GOT TO MAKE IT. WHY NOT YOU?" Untamed by Glennon Doyle

This quote stuck with me and I want to carry it with me. If someone is going to reach their dreams, why not you?

"I WILL NOT STAY, NOT EVER AGAIN - IN A ROOM OR CONVERSATION OR RELATIONSHIP OR INSTITUTION THAT REQUIRES ME TO ABANDON MYSELF." Untamed by Glennon Doyle

Set your boundaries and make them known.

Untamed by Glennon Doyle is not only a book many of us should read, it’s a book many of us need to read. Covering topics that are often seen as “taboo” when they are the topics we should be talked about.
Pick up this book and learn more about yourself and your relationship with what you believe versus what others believe. Realize where you stand, where you want to be, and act accordingly.

5 Ways to Stay Hopeful and Positive

We often find ourselves feeling discouraged and hopeless, especially in 2020. I know I have been struggling and I wanted to share 5 ways to stay hopeful and be positive that everyone can implement into their lives to try and keep their spirits lifted!

Things can and will get better. I want to help others and myself fight for our happiness even the toughest of times.

How to Stay Hopeful and Be Positive

#1 Self Care

Taking care of yourself should always be a priority, but it should be emphasized even more when you’re not feeling your best.

You will notice that most of my tips for staying hopeful and being positive can directly apply to taking care of yourself, that is because there is direct correlation.

Self-care involves physical, mental, and emotional health. In a perfect world we would be healthy in all these areas, but I know it is a struggle.

Put effort, time, and energy into yourself. Make self-care a priority. The beautiful part about this is while you’re working on being more hopeful and positive you will learn that doing this is a form of self-care.

I have a list of 5 self-care rules that you can review, many of them will relate directly to these tips!

#2 Disconnect

Social media and staying up-to-date with the news is a priority or habit in many of our lives, but you need to create a healthy balance.

Disconnect when you’re feeling overwhelmed or even better disconnect before you become overwhelmed.

I’m currently taking a break from Twitter because it has significantly impacted my mood. You can still be informed and active in the community, but it is better you control the information you are receiving instead of being overwhelmed by waves of information.

Social media can be used in a healthy way, but we often let it consume too much of our lives. The best advice I can give you is to take breaks and control your screen time.

Disconnect as soon as you start to feel anxious or overwhelmed, you are no help to anyone if you’re feeling discouraged or hopeless. Even the strongest people have bad days.

#3 Get Inspired

Surrounding yourself with people and things that make you feel and hopeful is crucial. I have compiled a list of different ways to inspire and motivate yourself:

  1. Make your living space a place of comfort.

When you wake up you want to feel like your opportunities are endless. This can look different for everyone, but here are some ways I make my living space a positive space:

    • Keep it clean
    • A vision board by my bed
    • Have blinds open for natural light
    • Candles or diffusers for nice scents
    • Decorations/Art/Photos
    • Calendar on display
  2. Fill your social media and interactions with positive/hopeful people.

I try to follow accounts that are run by people that I can look up to, people I can learn from, people who make a difference, and people who post graphics with positive and educational quotes. This can go further than social media, make sure your friend group holds the same positive vibes.

  3. Use art and media.

Watch movies, read books, listen to podcasts, or look at art that inspires you and gives you that feeling of hope in your heart. Art and the effect it can have on people is so underrated. Take advantage of it. If you are looking for books to inspire you I definitely recommend reading Dream Big by Bob Goff.

  4. Dive into your own creative side.

Let yourself express yourself through art or writing. Hobbies that promote your own individual creativity is so healthy for you.

  5. Keep a journal and a planner.

Plan for your future, write everything down. Get yourself excited for the sunny day coming on Saturday, get excited about a book release you are waiting for. You would be surprised how much this can lighten your spirits. I definitely recommend keeping a journal in a way to release and express your emotions. For every journal entry you write about how you’re feeling, follow it with a gratitude exercise to remind yourself that no matter how you’re feeling there is something to feel grateful for.

#4 Meditation

I know some people will be excited to see meditation listed and others will be skeptical, so let me first explain something to you.

Meditation does not always mean sitting cross-legged breathing for an hour.

Of course if you do want to do that you should, but it is not the only option to benefit from meditation.

Meditation, in my definition, is clearing your mind and finding your personal state of bliss.

Here are some options for this:

  • Yoga – yoga is great for the body and mind.
  • Guided Meditations – using videos or apps you can choose your length of meditation and be guided by someone in order to not become distracted. This is what I do and I find it so helpful!
  • Listen to music – make a calming playlist filled with music that makes you feel good. Try listening to it without letting your mind wander. The point of meditation is to escape your thoughts and heighten your emotions. You can create your own feel-good playlist using my questionnaire.
  • Taking a walk.

There can be many other ways to meditate. If you need some scientific evidence on why you should meditate and how it can help I suggest you learn from Dr. Joe Dispenza.

The main goal of meditation is to focus on your breathing to clear your mind and then flood your body’s energy centers with feelings of hopefulness and positive emotions.

#5 Get Outside

Nature has so many benefits. I recommend Sarah Iven’s book Forest Therapy to learn more of the science, but nature can and will be good for your mental and physical health.

Incorporating nature into your everyday life is important and should be a priority for you.

When you find yourself surrounded by nature you will see, hear, touch, smell, and maybe even taste an array of different things. This can spark your imagination.

Your problems will also seem a lot smaller when you see the size of the world around you. It can definitely inspire you to be hopeful and positive.

With these tips you can surely bring more hope into your life. Being positive is essential to your happiness. I know it is easy to get discouraged and a lot harder to pull yourself out of the unhappy state, but with these tips you can work towards the happiness you deserve.

Who Should Read Dream Big?

If you love self-help books and are on your own journey to finding and achieving your purpose, this is the perfect book.
An easy and quick read that will bring you hope. If you want to take the first steps to reach your goals, start here!

 Dream Big Review

Although Dream Big by Bob Goff was not on my initial TBR list for 2020, it is one of my favorite reads so far this year!
Dream Big is a heartwarming, motivational, and inspirational read. I giggled to myself, cried, and thought deeply as I read this book. I could not put it down!
Bob Goff released his newest book on June 23rd of this year and I started reading it right away!
Dream Big dives into ambitions. Bob guides you in discovering your ambitions and the steps it requires to make them a reality. Failures, setbacks, and steps forward are all essential to your journey. Sharing his personal experiences, Bob leaves you feeling inspired.
Bob is a passionate Christian, so there are a lot of religious references throughout the book, however, I am not a religious person and I still enjoyed the book as it is not focused on religion. His references to Christianity come from his faith and hope, it is not preachy in any way.
Even if you’re not Christian, this book is still amazing to read! Do not let the religious aspects deter you if it is something you feel strongly about.
At the end of the book, there are amazing questions and prompts to encourage you to think about your own goals and journey. You can reference these questions as you’re reading or, like myself, you can visit them when you finish the book.
I will post again once I finish the journal prompts, the book itself has already inspired me to chase my ambitions so I am confident that these questions and prompts will help me even more!

Quotes From Dream Big

In this section, I share my favorite quotes from the book.
I often highlight and make notes in my self-help books and I am not exaggerating when I say I almost highlighted the entire book.
It was difficult to choose my favorites, but I managed to share a few shorter ones that speak so much.

We all have failures, setbacks, and mistakes. What matters most is what you do after. What is your reaction? How will you let this define you? Will you grow from it or cling to it? A lot of thought-provoking questions can arise from this quote.

A beautiful quote to motivate you to chase your ambitions. Love and hope are not only necessary but also they are beautiful relationships to hold onto during your journey.

I know it is hard to stay positive sometimes, and I know you do not always want to hear the overly positive people preaching to you to look on the “bright side”. However, the most successful people will look for their silver lining and work harder and better after a “mess up”. Use it to fuel you, not drain you.

A lot of us, myself included, feel pressure to be perfect as soon as we begin our journey. We always hear that everyone had to start somewhere, but most of us only know these people at their peaks and it is hard to imagine.
It is important for us to be patient with ourselves no matter where we are in our journey. The point is to grow and learn into the person you want to be! How can we expect to start exactly where we want to be? That just does not make sense.
Embrace that you’re learning and growing. Embrace that you are not an expert. Start somewhere and set your goals so you can chase this “perfect” feeling you want to feel.

Self-awareness and self-reflection have been the most important drivers in my own personal success.
Setting goals and working hard is necessary, but if you are not reflecting on how far you’ve come or reflected on the mistakes you have made then you will not move forward at your best pace.
Understanding yourself and what has happened to you is essential to finding success and happiness. I like to self-reflect every month, but you can do it every week or even every day! Put it into your regular routines.

If we do not look at our lives clearly, we will fail to really learn from our experiences. Every single one of our experiences matter, they teach us something, the good and the bad.
Sometimes we like to omit aspects of our experiences and try and convince ourselves of false perspectives.
Denying the truth of the situation does not help you. Use the truths to learn and grow, they are tools for reaching your successes and do not need to be feared.

As Bob would say: “love does”.

Society has convinced us we need to exhaust ourselves to be successful, this is simply not true.
We all need physical and mental rest. To be at your best you need to rest.
Incorporate rest into your schedule and routines, normalize resting!

The small things matter more than you think. Small actions filled with love matter, celebrate every small accomplishment!

Focus on who you want to be, be that person.

You will never regret trying, the what-ifs of doing nothing will eat away at you.

I recommend this book to anyone who is trying to follow their dreams, anyone who needs that little push to start on their journey! This book has brought me so much joy, hope, and inspiration, thank you Bob Goff for this and for helping me see a glimmer of hope in this horrible year!

 Life of Pi Review

Life of Pi by Yann Martel is one of the several books on my TBR list for 2020. This read was long overdue since it is a popular classic that is recommended by many people. And now I am recommending you read it too.

Life of Pi is a story about a young man who discusses his adventure over the Pacific Ocean after a shipwreck that involves a tiger. Yes, a tiger with the name Richard Parker.

Pi (Piscine) is curious about religion and his position within it. It brings a great discussion about beliefs and social constructs surrounding religion. I am not a religious person, but the discussions about religion in this novel were fascinating to read because it really made the reader think and it revealed a lot about the main character.

Pi’s family owned a zoo, which is where the tiger comes from. The book includes a lot of information, facts, and discussions about zoos and the animals within it. I also think it is a good educator for the readers!

Pi and his family are relocating to Canada and like Noah and his ark take their zoo animals on a ship to be shipped off to other zoos as they embark on their new life in Canada. An issue occurs and the ship they are riding on goes down in the middle of the night. The rest of the story revolves around Pi’s survival on a lifeboat and raft with several zoo animals that escaped the shipwreck. A zebra, hyena, orangutan, and of course Richard Parker.

The story is graphic and a little violent, but that is expected when you are fighting for your life on a lifeboat filled with zoo animals. Pi’s story has many ups and downs and there is never a dull moment. I was glued to the book wondering what would happen next, could Pi really survive this?

The most significant part of this story comes in the last chapters. After you follow Pi’s adventure and read the horrible events that happened on the lifeboat the ending plot twist ties every doubt and question you have together. Every question is answered in the final moments of this book, and a single quote spoken by Pi himself makes this book one of the greatest of all time.

Quotes From Life of Pi

In this section, I share my favorite quotes from the book.

Some quotes I will have a small discussion on what this quote means from my interpretation, but some quotes are so beautiful and influential I like to leave the unique feeling and interpretation to you.

Many of us lose sight of the importance of creativity and imagination.

We lose our own and appreciation for other artistic expressions.

We need to reclaim it because it is the art that makes life worthwhile.

This quote comes from Pi thinking about the zoo his family used to own.

I love how it summarized how it feels to reflect on a memory.

Something that was so large and influential now fits into a thought inside your head.

When reading this part of the book it is a very eye-opening moment.

I think many will interpret it differently, but for me, I related to this one realization because it reflected how worrying about something does not help you and oftentimes you are not even worrying about the right thing.

Oftentimes the thing you are worrying about will not even happen.

No matter where you stand when it comes to religion, beliefs, and spirituality.

When life gets hard and you find yourself feeling low, you find yourself searching for something bigger than life to give you the answers.

It could be the universe, nature, a god, anything! No matter what you look for, you are looking for something or someone in a time of need.

Many people are stuck in their ways and want to live in what is comfortable.

You do not grow there.

Life of Pi by Yann Martel is easily one of the best books I have ever read. I was skeptical as I was reading, but the very last chapter changes the entire perspective and leaves you shocked and amazed. Brilliant story-telling and eye-opening discussions. I recommend this book to everyone.
